Shear Connector JDSD

JORDAHL® double shear connectors can be used in any application in which high shear forces need to be transmitted across gaps in a structure, for example in the case of expansion joints between two concrete slabs, in ceilings and walls, in expansion joints between supports and walls or girders and ceilings.

Slab-to-Slab Connections

Foundation slabs

Large foundation slabs have expansion joints and movement joints across which shear forces need to be transmitted. JORDAHL® double shear connectors absorb these loads and compensate for any displacements which occur.

Pre-stressed ceiling slabs

In pre-stressed slabs the JORDAHL® double shear connector is placed in the zero-moment line, i.e. the location in which only minor bending moments occur, or none at all,  but maximum shear forces occur.

Structural expansion joints in frame corners

In long buildings, separation with the aid of structural expansion joints is often required. Traditionally, the subdivision of the building into sections requires a support to be positioned before and after the expansion joint. These are referred to as double supports. By using double shear connectors, one of these supports can be omitted. This reduces costs, shortens construction time and increases floor space.

Cantilever brackets and half-overlapping joints are problematic to construct, difficult to build and expensive. These complex details can be omitted by using double shear connectors. As a result, construction/design and building can be simplified, costs can be saved and improved detail solutions can be designed.

For this type of connection it is also possible to arrange the double shear connectors one above the other. The diagram shows a possible arrangement of the reinforcement.

Here, four JORDAHL® double shear connectors are required in each case to transmit the high shear forces from the floor joists into the supports.

Double shear connectors are used for connection and alignment between bridge supporting structures and bridge abutments. Installation is made significantly easier by the fact that the double shear connectors allow the road surface to be subsequently lifted up in order to change the abutments.

Joints in balustrades

The use of shear connectors in the vertical joints of balustrades is a simple and cost-effective way to connect the sections to each other. Double shear connectors also enable a certain amount of twisting in the joints without reducing the horizontal shear resistance.
